Scunthorpe Star

The 'Star' sequence of newspapers has had series of name changes - see NEWSPLAN.

Index produced as MSC project c 1981 - headings include personal names, place names, firms and organisations - also some see also references. Headings not structured and no printed list of headings so lateral thinking and local knowledge needed.

Births/marriages/deaths included.

Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph

Index on computer data-base

1966 - to date

Scunthorpe Central Library

Access database with Headings and Keywords for searching. Printed list of Headings used.

Custom-built searches can be made by staff for keywords, dates etc. Not every item in the paper is indexed. No births/marriages/deaths.

Print-out every quarter which is merged to produce list for public consultation.

Selby Times

Selby Library

The index is a general cuttings file, indexed by personal name, place and subject. The cuttings are made at the discretion of the local studies librarian. The cuttings are photocopies.

Begun in 1950s. Self-indexing, arranged by subjects e.g. textile firms, schools, churches and chapels - then by name.

Major collections on topics such as fire at Valley Parade Football ground, Peter Sutcliffe (Yorkshire Ripper), immigration and ethnic minorities.

Bradford Metropolitan District area since 1974.
